Week 12 blog:Report calls out worst produce for pesticides—strawberries, spinach top list
When I read this article I couldn't believe that some of my favorite fruits and vegetables have topped the "Dirty Dozen"list of consistently tainted with harmful pesticide published by the Environmental Working Group. The Environmental Working Group is an organization that analyze federal data on pesticides used in produce. At the top of the list is strawberry and spinach at 98% of samples taken had large amount of pesticide residue. Strawberry coming in at number one shows results of at least 1/3 of strawberries contain 10 or more pesticides, which is very shocking to me, especially since strawberry is such a common fruit that we eat. Pesticides are linked to infertility which means we should be more careful, make sure we clean our produce well, and if possible avoid certain produce that is on the list. The is a "Clean Fifteen" list that was published too, and it may be a safer option then the "Dirty Dozen". The top two produce on the list is avocados and sweet corn with the least possibility of having pesticides. I think these results are great in informing the public what to avoid and what are safe to eat.

Hi Feng,
ReplyDeleteThis is crazy! I love strawberries- and spinach! Particularly in a summer salad! This is so sad to hear. But is very important to know so that I know to only shop for spinach and strawberries organically and at farmers markets. This is usually where you get the best strawberries anyways. I also love avocados, so it is good that they have the least amount of pesticides.
I agree, I think those results are definitely very helpful in informing the public which foods are safe and unsafe to eat. I am so devastated to learn that strawberries and spinach are the top two foods on the Dirty Dozen list! They are my favorite! I will now be referring to the EWG website about all of this information and buying organic from now on. It just seems like an easier choice when I am unsure of a certain fruit or vegetable.
