M12.9: Climate Change

1) What do you personally find most troubling about climate change?
What I find most troubling about climate change is there are people that are ignorant to the seriousness about it, refusing to believe that is the cause of many natural disasters and would not support the prevention of climate change. I don't understand why not everyone is on board with making changes to reduce the impact of climate change to ensure that our planet still have a future.
2) As a public health professional, what do you think needs the greatest attention right now?
As a public health professional, I think what needs the greatest attention right now is climate change. The impact and after effect of climate change is on all our essential to maintain our lifestyle. Climate change impact air quality, causes drought, flood, superstorm, and wildfire which influence water quality, marine life and agriculture, and all these environmental changes have consequences on human health. Everything comes in full circles, which is why I think if we can focus on how we can decrease the impact of climate change it will have a domino effect benefiting other problems that is plaguing our society today.
3) If you were visiting with a long-lost relative who had never heard about climate change, how would you describe it and its attendant human health and ecological threats?

I think I would draw a picture of how the rising temperature is impacting the air, land and sea and how it is a cycle that goes hand in hand. I would go on to explain how our carbon footprint is contributing to this change, and that it's causing major health problems around the world due to air pollutions. Then I would use recent disasters such as the wildfires in California, and Hurricane Maria to make my point on how climate change contributed to these natural disasters.

    Hi Feng,

    I agree that climate change needs to be addressed because it effects so many aspects of our living lifestyle. Great idea on drawing a picture for your long lost relative! I think a diagram would definitely illustrate the impact it has because it all comes together in one picture on one page. You make a strong point by discussing natural disasters too.

    It is really disturbing that people are still not recognizing that climate change is an issue. They are definitely very ignorant and I cannot wrap my brain around as to why they do not believe it. I know that money plays a large role in this issue...unfortunately. But great attention does need to be made on climate change because it is only going to become worse as time goes on.

Week 14 blog: Water shortage by 2050?

The UN has just reported that 5 billion people will be affected by water shortage by 2050 due to increase demand and pollution.This is a scary scenario if we all don't come up with solutions to prevent that from happening. Recently in Colorado, there have been suggestions of reusing water, but that still requires more study. In the article they suggest a greener approach, instead of using steels and concretes infrastructures to manage water, instead revert back to nature especially for agriculture, where we should utilize rainwater rather than irrigation. Another suggestion was switching to dry toilets, a toilet that don't use water to flush, minimizing water use.
