Week 11 blog:Turning food waste into animal feed could take a chunk out of livestock emissions
This article introduces a new alternative to sustainability for our planet. The NOSHAN project is headed by seven European countries that have been researching turning fruit, vegetable, cereal and dairy waste into animal feed for pigs and chickens. According to the United Nations, 1/3 of food that is produced for human food consumption is wasted, so why not turned the food that we are throwing down he drain and turn it into another source of food in a very important agricultural market. The project found that waste from pumpkins, rapeseed, cheese yogurt, barley, mushroom and olives were the most nutrient rich source for use as animal feed. The results from the investigation shows that current animal feeds constitute about 45% of greenhouse gas emission from the growing and production of animal food, therefore if we recycle food waste then we could cut down on the carbon footprint. Since our topic this week is on zero waste life, I thought this article may be appropriate as an idea to what we can do with our food waste. I think this project have potential for greatness, because it is very sustainable and by turning all the food that we are wasting into a new source of food for animals that is not full of unwanted chemicals or drugs in it would ensure that our animal products would be more safer and organic. Not only are we reducing the waste going into landfills but we are also reducing the amount to emission into the atmosphere, therefore I don't see anything bad about this idea at all.

Hi Feng,
ReplyDeleteThis is awesome!! I love that they are finding way to reuse all the waste we produce. I'm worried about foods from restaurants though and processed foods because a lot of time those foods are cooked in hydrogenated oils and high amounts of sugar that may not be great for the animals.
That is so funny that we ended up writing about the same article! It just hows how interesting it was to read. You made excellent points, there are no bad affects from this idea at all. In fact it would do the complete opposite and develop only sustainable useful affects because there would be less deforestation and livestock emissions into the atmosphere.
