M11.5: Zero Waste Life

After watching the Youtube video, I was really amazed at what the speaker, Lauren Singer was able to accomplish in 3 years. I think she have brought up some really good points and ideas to reduce waste. Personally, I have been cutting back on buying fruits and vegetables from grocery store and switching to buying it at farmers markets. I always have reusable bags in my bag or in my car that way I can minimize using plastic or paper bags. I agree with Lauren that we need to cut down on the amount of plastic that we use and I really like her idea of DIY. I was blown by how amazing she was able to make her own soap, lotion, deodorant and cleaning supplies. I must admit that I am not very good at DIY, but she did bring up a good point, making these products ourselves ensures that all the ingredients are natural and not harmful to the environment and to our body. The one thing that I think may be a little challenging for me is shopping. I frequently have to remind myself that I don't really need another pair of shoes or handbag, therefore this is something that I need to work on.  I definitely think that the zero waste concept is a really good idea, and that it should be more widely promoted, although people won't completely change their lifestyle immediately but it is good to educate them on the benefits and to start making small changes toward reducing their waste, such as cutting out plastic use. I think I will share this idea with my family to see how we can make some changes to reduce the amount of products we are dumping on our planet.

  1. Hi Feng,
I thought Lauren Singer did a really great job at reducing waste! She went so extreme. But, I feel that some people need to go that extreme and tell their story in order for an impact to be made. It is awesome that you already do some things such as buy from a farmers market and have reusable bags with you to use. I also do the same thing!

  2. I was really impressed when Lauren talked about her commitment to a zero waste lifestyle for three years as well. I am not good at doing anything DIY either, but she made me think that it was possible for us--especially if we want to actually know what is in our personal care products. We should try it some time! :) And if we fail, we can always just research new products that are sustainable, organic, and all natural. It'll kind of be a win-win situation, that is, if you like using new products.
