Week 9 blog: controversial toxic pollution liability bill

The senates in Vermont have just passed a bill that makes companies that release toxic waste into the environment or caused any toxic pollutions would be held liable and these polluters would have to take responsibility. I think this is a great idea to make operations that are polluting our environment to   bear responsibility therefore would reconsider using those toxic chemicals  and come up with other safer alternatives. This bill was met with many controversies, many opposing voices were concerned about increased liability insurance cost and businesses leaving Vermont. I think if all states have a similar liability bill then business would not leave because there is no where for them to go without being met with the same penalty. I do agree with one of the senators that there is no specific focus in the bill of how they were planning on protecting the environment, which I think is very important to highlight what steps the state is planning on taking, so some editing should be done to add in this section. Overall, I think this is a great start and every state and country should get on board with it.

  1. How interesting! I am glad to learn that Vermont is taking action to eliminate toxic waste being released into the environment. Companies do need to take responsibility for their actions, especially when it comes to potentially affecting the health of communities around their facilities. Hopefully more states will follow Vermont and pass their own bills to hold companies reliable for their actions.

  2. Hi Feng,
This is such a great idea. I wish other states would do the same thing to eliminate toxic waste. I also wish city legislation did the same thing because sometimes it is harder to tackle it at a bigger level. I think it is a great idea to pass a bill. I particularly thing bigger product corporations should have specific legislation about environmental toxic waste with their waste products.
