M6.6: Use of Antibiotics
In the article Antibiotic Resistance 101, antibiotic resistance is a major concern in the health field because if we have a widespread antibiotic resistant to the common antibiotics, we don't have any antibiotics that can kill these antibiotic resistant bacterias. In many health systems today there is an infectious disease team that looks into every antibiotic being prescribed to the patients to determine whether it is necessary to prescribe antibiotics for their condition. The purpose of these monitoring is to prevent patients from antibiotic resistant bacterias. It is not recommended that people take antibiotics for the common cold cause the cold is caused mainly by viruses and not by bacteria, therefore if people take antibiotics too often their body will build resistances and it is not actually curing them of their cold. It is very dangerous that meat from these factory farms when eaten by humans it can transmit these antibiotic resistant bacteria, and humans will become resistant to certain bacteria. In the article Nearby Livestock May Raise 'Superbug" risk , the superbug situation is very real and it can spread. I remembered a few years ago, I read an article about a women whom was admitted to the hospital with the superbug and most of the antibiotics that we have did not work and the doctors need to give her a song combination of antibiotics to keep her condition under control. Taking large doses of antibiotic will kill our immune system and make us weak and susceptible to all types of pathogen.
I have read an article that was similar to Scientists Discover that Antimicrobial wipes and soaps may be making you (And Society) Sick, and it does make sense that the overuse of antimicrobial wipes and soaps is killing all the good bacteria that is on our body which is actually there to defend our body against invader pathogens. I remembered the popularity of using antimicrobial wipes and soaps started after the SARS outbreak, and the fear instill in people pushed them to be dependent on antimicrobial products. I think we should still use antimicrobial products but we still need to remember to do the traditional hand washing. In the article on antimicrobial hospital furnishing did not come to a conclusion that using antimicrobial furnishing was actually beneficial and further studies needed to be done. There were some evidence that antimicrobial in the furnishing materials does reduce hospital acquired infections but it does not outweigh the risk factors of antibiotic resistance and other human and environmental harm. I think we should not be dependent on one thing to sanitize our surfaces and it has been shown that regular soap and water have proven to be more effective.

I agree, Feng, we should not be dependent on one method of antibiotics. Especially with the antimicrobial hospital furnishings, it'd be effective at first but eventually the pathogens will evolve to become resistant against those antimicrobial products. So we need to remember to use the furnishings periodically while also continuing to wash out hands (and other surfaces) with regular soap.
ReplyDeleteHi Feng,
ReplyDeleteWe definitely should not be dependents on antibacterial products and antibiotics. Neither is safe to be dependent on because we kill all bacteria - including what is good for us. In order to keep our planet healthy, we need to reduce the use of these types of products. I was going to by a antimicrobial yoga mat earlier this week and decided against it because it would just be healthier to rinse the mat after every use. I was afraid of what chemicals I would be exposed to during my yoga session.
