M2.3 Household Products

The first product that I looked at was the Lysol Dual Action wipes, which had a health and flammability rating of 1 which is overall very safe. The only hazard warning was eye irritation. I use Lysol wipes very frequently to clean my surfaces so I was happy to see that it is an overall safe product to use as long as it doesn't get into my eye. The second product was Dawn liquid dish soap, which also had a health and flammability rating of 1 and there was no finding of carcinogen. The hazardous warning is prevent eye irritation and accidental ingestion. Knowing these information tells me the two product are good and safe to be used in my house. I was not really surprised with the rating because I think that these two products are used to clean items and surfaces that we use and touch everyday so it would be best to have little to no health risk. If there were bad rating and toxicity in these products then I would definitely find new products that are more safer to use. Just like the cosmetic product, everyone should know about these health risks and toxicity in household products because we use it so regularly. I think lack of knowledge as a reason behind why some people don't know about these risks.

    I agree, since people are not informed about the toxicity of household products, they are unaware of the risks. I am glad you found that the products you were using are safer than other products! It is always nice to find those things out because if we were to find out that the products we use regularly are toxic, it would be heartbreaking. Not only would we not want to use those products anymore but we were also exposed to harmful chemicals while using them. Anyways, that was my random rant. I'm glad your products were safe though!

    I'm really glad that the two household items you are using are safe for at home use. I think this is done intentionally otherwise the items would be harder to purchase. I found that many of my items were non-carcinogenic but eye irritants or flammable. This just means we have to be careful with how we handle our products.

M14.4: Think about it

Living in the middle of the Pacific ocean, hurricanes are pretty common each year. Fortunately, we haven't been hit by any major hurricanes, but we have suffered many storms resulting from the hurricanes that pass through. The NCDMPH website provides very useful information on health information for travelers which is much needed since Hawaii is tourist destination. The website also provides information on epidemics from dead bodies, how to handle psychosocial needs of children after the disaster, possible environmental impacts, evacuation plans and recovery plans. I think this website is a great resource to have especially with global warming, more hurricanes are expected to happen. Week 14 blog: Water shortage by 2050?

The UN has just reported that 5 billion people will be affected by water shortage by 2050 due to increase demand and pollution.This is a scary scenario if we all don't come up with solutions to prevent that from happening. Recently in Colorado, there have been suggestions of reusing water, but that still requires more study. In the article they suggest a greener approach, instead of using steels and concretes infrastructures to manage water, instead revert back to nature especially for agriculture, where we should utilize rainwater rather than irrigation. Another suggestion was switching to dry toilets, a toilet that don't use water to flush, minimizing water use.
