M2.2 Blog Assignment: Personal Care Products Submit Assignment

The first product that I looked up was my body wash, Dove deep moisture body wash. The result from the Safe Cosmetics Database had an overall rating of 5 which is moderate hazard according to their scale.  There is a low chance of cancer, but high in allergies, irritation and contamination. I was very surprised that cosmetic products contain many ingredients that may be hazardous and toxic. Overall I was pleased that the rating wasn't in the higher number especially since this is a product that I used on a regular basis.  I was glad that the developmental and reproductive toxicity was low because I am in my reproductive age and hope to someday be a mother, so it was comforting to know that the body wash does not have many ingredients that would jeopardize it. The second product that I looked at was my Neutrogena Ultra Sheer sunscreen, which I also use on a daily basis. The result was very similar to my body wash with an overall rating of 5. After looking at the results I am beginning to think about how to go about choosing my cosmetic products, not just basing my decisions on the popularity of the brand and the possible effect that it would deliver, but to start looking closely at the ingredient list and how those ingredients might affect my health. This database is a wonderful tool for everyone to reference to when deciding whether a certain consumer products is more safe to use than others. I think some people might not know about these risk due to their lack of knowledge about it or they never thought that it maybe harmful.

    Hello Feng,
    The EWG website is a great tool to use when researching different personal care products. I am glad you found that the products you were using did not score very high. I played around with the website before that found that other products scored in the 9-10 range. It is surprising that they would even be sold in stores at that point--being that toxic.

    I agree that this website is a great tool to use. I did find that the website didn't have a lot of the specific cosmetics that I use. That could be because there are so many various brands out now. I used to use the Dove body wash for years growing up! I'm glad I change to an all organic and biodegradable Dr. Bronner's body wash after reading your specific review. I also wonder if all sunscreens are a moderate score since there are a lot of chemicals in sunscreens.

Living in the middle of the Pacific ocean, hurricanes are pretty common each year. Fortunately, we haven't been hit by any major hurricanes, but we have suffered many storms resulting from the hurricanes that pass through. The NCDMPH website provides very useful information on health information for travelers which is much needed since Hawaii is tourist destination. The website also provides information on epidemics from dead bodies, how to handle psychosocial needs of children after the disaster, possible environmental impacts, evacuation plans and recovery plans. I think this website is a great resource to have especially with global warming, more hurricanes are expected to happen. Week 14 blog: Water shortage by 2050?

The UN has just reported that 5 billion people will be affected by water shortage by 2050 due to increase demand and pollution.This is a scary scenario if we all don't come up with solutions to prevent that from happening. Recently in Colorado, there have been suggestions of reusing water, but that still requires more study. In the article they suggest a greener approach, instead of using steels and concretes infrastructures to manage water, instead revert back to nature especially for agriculture, where we should utilize rainwater rather than irrigation. Another suggestion was switching to dry toilets, a toilet that don't use water to flush, minimizing water use.
